Uses of Acetec Capsules (Generic Acitretin)

Acetec (Generic Acitretin) is used to treat severe resistant psoriasis in adults.

Acetec Capsules – Dosage

Initial dose: 25 to 50 mg orally as a single dose with food.
Maintenance dose: 25 to 50 mg/day; dosage should be individualized according to patient’s response.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Acetec is an oral retinoid. Retinoid is a form of Vitamin A. The mechanism of action is not known yet.

What to Do in Case You Miss a Dose of Acetec capsules

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Do not take a double dose.

Storage Instructions for Acetec capsules

Store Acetec capsules in a dry place at room temperature.

Warnings and Precautions

Do avoid getting pregnant during your treatment, and for at least 3 years after discontinuing your treatment with Acetec. Acitretin, the pharmaceutical ingredient in Acetec capsules, can harm an unborn baby.
Undergo 2 pregnancy tests before treatment, and use 2 effective methods of contraception during treatment with Acetec (Acitretin).
Do not use "minipills" (progestin-only birth control pills) while taking Acetec. This form of birth control pills may not work while taking Acetec.
Repeat pregnancy tests each month.
Do not breastfeed while taking Acetec (Acitretin). Acetretin can pass into your milk.
Do not donate blood while taking Acetec capsules, and for at least 3 years after you have taken the last dose.
Women who are treated with Acetec must not drink alcohol during treatment and for at least 2 years after the treatment (alcohol can cause acitretin to convert to another substance in your body that can take 3 years or longer to be eliminated from your body).
It may take 2 to 3 months before you get the full benefit of Acetec capsules.
Tell your doctor, if you have any of these conditions:

  • kidney or liver disease;
  • heart disease;
  • high cholesterol;
  • diabetes (you may need to check your blood sugar more often);
  • depression;
  • if you receive phototherapy;
  • if you drink large amounts of alcohol;
  • if you have ever taken etretinate (Tegison or Tigason)

Possible Side Effects

The side effects of Acetec Capsules (Generic Acitretin) include Cheilitis, rhinitis, dry mouth, arthralgia, spinal hyperostosis, alopecia, skin peeling, dry skin, nail disorder, pruritus, erythematous rash, hyperesthesia, paresthesia, paronychia, skin atrophy, sticky skin, and alteration in lipids.
Possible side effects may also include chapped lips; peeling fingertips, palms, and soles; itching; scaly skin all over; weak nails; sticky or fragile (weak) skin; runny or dry nose; nosebleeds; dry mouth; joint pain; tight muscles; hair loss; dry eyes; and rise in blood fats (lipids).
Less frequent, but potentially serious side effects include: bad headaches, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision; decreased vision in the dark; depression; yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes, loss of appetite or dark urine; aches or pains in your bones, joints, muscles or back, trouble moving; loss of feeling in your hands or feet; frequent urination, great thirst or hunger. Shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain, weakness, trouble speaking, or swelling of a leg may be signs of a heart attack, blood clots, or stroke.
